The Chain Meteorological registers

The Chain Meteorological registers

Help us transcribe and uncover weather data recorded by the Baker Gabb family at ‘The Chain’, Abergavenny from the 1880s to the 1940s. The data will help us understand the weather and climate of the period in extraordinary detail.

Over a period of sixty years, from the 1880s to the 1940s, the Baker Gabb family, who hailed from 'The Chain', Abergavenny, were responsible for recording the weather patterns on a daily basis. Thermometer, barometer and rain gauge measurements were meticulously recorded and this data was kept safely by them in the form of registers. Among the pages are also diary entries and newspaper clippings relating to the weather and the Baker Gabb family.

Now, a valuable part of the National Library of Wales' collections, all the registers have been digitised so that they can be accessed online. By transcribing the weather data recorded over the years you will help us understand the weather and climate of the period in extraordinary detail.
